When your kid throws a tantrum in a shop what do you do?
At home it might be easier to deal with a tantrum because there’s no staring or disapproving looks from judgemental strangers in public.
We’ll set the scene, you’re walking through a supermarket, and maybe you need to get batteries so you end up down that aisle; the toy aisle.
You have your toddler in tow, you just want to get what you came for and leave but your child has already gotten their paws on a colourful piece of plastic.
You say no – knowing all too well what’s about to happen as your kid’s face changes – their bottom lip begins to tremble and you can almost hear them filling their lungs for the first scream.
How can you stop the tears from falling (either your own or your child’s) as you just want to get in and out of the shop?
One mum has a way to de-escalate the situation before it turns into a full-blown temper tantrum.
She took to the Family Lowdown Tips and Ideas group on Facebook to explain exactly what she does to nip the drama right in the bud.
“When they ask for a toy I instantly say, ‘Let’s take a picture to send to Father Christmas’.Touch wood, I’ve never had a tantrum or tears so far, she just goes ‘Okay’.”
The mum added: “Been doing for years now works a treat. Also helps you remember what they have asked for when have a picture.”
It’s just so simple but it makes sense, we’ll have to try it out ourselves.
