Why do kids chew on their shirt collars? Here’s how to put a stop to it

Jody Coffey

If you’ve ever looked at your child only to find them gnawing on their shirt collar, you’re likely not alone.

In fact, it’s a very common habit for kids to adopt.

Chewing on their shirts may be inconvenient if you’re planning to donate their clothes once they’ve grown out of them and it comes with the added annoyance if it’s a brand-new item of clothing.

However, it may also give parents anxiety that there’s a deeper and more worrying meaning to their shirt chewing.

Rest assured, it isn’t a cause for concern when it comes to their well-being.

Why do kids chew on their clothing?

Kids are always learning and adapting so the reason behind their chewing habit is one that makes total sense.

According to Very Well Family, children may be looking for oral stimulation, which is an integral part of their development.

As newborns, they are always in search of a breast or bottle. After that, it’s likely a dummy or their thumbs.

Therefore, the progression to their shirts is a natural one that helps them to self-regulate or soothe themselves when they are upset – the same way they have done in the past.

Another reason for this may be to help them focus – the same way an adult might chew on a pen when they’re trying to concentrate on work, according to Romper.

Children naturally may go for their shirt collar at school while learning without even realising they are doing it.

How do I stop my child from chewing on their shirt?

While it’s generally not a harmful habit or one that necessarily needs intervention, if your child’s chewing is destroying their clothing, you may want to put an end to it.

Besides, it’s also not something a parent wants to see their little one bring from childhood into their teenage years and beyond.

The best way to phase out this practice is to swap it out with something else to chew on, according to Pragmatic Lifestyle.

In the case of an older child, gum is suggested as a good alternative, so long as they are age-appropriate.

If your child is too young for gum, necklaces made from food-grade silicone are a good way to turn their attention away from their shirts.
