Mum fumes at husband after letting their toddler fall down the stairs

Ellen Fitzpatrick

One mum has been left fuming after she asked her husband to watch their toddler, only for it to end in a “preventable” accident.

Taking to Mumsnet with her problem, the mother revealed that she had asked her husband to watch over their 15-month-old daughter while she did some jobs around the house.

It was during this time that she heard the husband swearing and ran from the utility room to see her daughter “bouncing down a flight of six solid mahogany stairs.”

While the child cried straight away, she seemed okay and the parents took her to get looked at by a doctor very late at night.

She wrote: “I know kids have accidents, but this was completely preventable.”

She went on to say that her husband had left things on the floor that the child should not have been able to get a hold of and instead of taking it off her and putting it away, the child ran into the hallway and straight down the stairs.

“I never leave doors open when I am watching her for this very reason – I also would have picked her up and relocated the items elsewhere while holding her.

“I’m always on at him about safety issues and I feel like he never takes me seriously. Well, now I am left with the image of her bouncing down the stairs like a ragdoll and I am f***ing fuming. She could have been killed or seriously injured.”

The mum asked her peers if she was being unreasonable for still being so angry with her husband, with one pointing out the lack of gates on the stairs.

They said: “Open tread stairs can be carpeted if they are made of wood, having all doors shut or a gate on everydoor to me suggests it either likely isn’t a suitable environment for a small toddler. What will you do in a few months when she can climb over stairgates?”

Another said: “Why do you need to pay someone to fit stair gates?? They just wedge in to the walls or bannister either side.”

While a third added: “Definitely teach the toddler how to navigate stairs safely though. This wasn’t DHs fault so give him a break, you’ll have accidents too and you’ll be glad for a bit of compassion when you do.”
