Volvo’s new baby seat concept car is a nice idea. But a silly one

Katie Mythen-Lynch

If you happen to have more money than sense in the future, you can wave goodbye to awkward travel systems, car seats and safety belts.

For Volvo has unveiled a concept car with a built-in baby seat instead of a passenger seat.

It might only be usable for the first four years of your child’s life, but perhaps you’re the type of parent who replaces their car on a whim, or maybe you’re looking for a run-around for the Nanny? In that case the “Excellence Child Seat Concept” for the 2016 XC90 SUV is for you.

If you’d like to chat to your other half on those drives to the country club however, you’ll need to invest in a chauffeur – the rear-facing, swiveling baby seat is located next to the driver, so any extra adults must travel in the back, which as you can see in this image is actually much better for keeping your linen pantsuit and freshly blow-dried hair in good nick while stylishly navigating the journey through motherhood…

The design ensures that the frontal passenger airbag is always disconnected whenever there is an Excellence child seat concept in the car, so really, your little prince or princess couldn’t be safer.

While there’s no doubt Volvo are to be applauded for completely re-imagining how children might travel safely in cars of the future, we can’t see this one taking off in Ireland just yet.
