This Mum Is Being Praised For Her Extremely Honest Postpartum Photo

Trine Jensen-Burke

When I packed my first hospital bag when pregnant with my little girl, I happily included my favourite pair of J. Brand jeans in there, thinking I wanted to make sure I looked the part for going home (and was determined to be a yummy mummy from day #1)

Well, needless to say I did not leave hospital in the aforementioned jeans (and did indeed not even fit into them until a good four months later…)

And it wasn’t just the fact that you stomach (and thighs and ass…) don’t immediately shrink back to normal once you give birth that took me by surprise a little. Those hospital paper underpants and giant sanitary towels you have to wear are not exactly spoken widely about either, I feel… (I mean; I had packed some a set of lovely white lace underpants to go home in myself!)

All this mystery surrounding our postpartum bodies is what made American mum Amanda Bacon share this now gone viral uncensored photo of herself shortly after having given birth to her second baby.

The candid image captures the reality of childbirth – in all its glory. Bacon titled it: “Motherhood Uncensored”.

“I’m sharing this picture because it’s real,” she wrote alongside the image. “This is motherhood; it’s raw, stunning, messy, and freaking hilarious all rolled into one. Having a baby is a beautiful experience, and the realities of postpartum life aren’t spoken enough about. And definitely not photographed enough.”

The mum-of-two added that she knew when sharing the post that some people would probably find the photo ‘uncomfortable’, and she questioned why this might be.

‘We all should try and educate, empower and embrace every aspect of childbirth, including moments like this. And do it while having a sense of humor. Nothing says welcome to motherhood like an adorable squishy baby, and a giant mom diaper.”

And mums around the world are relating.

“This is so true,” one mother commented on the photo. “After all the prenatal classes I went to and books I read not once did it mention what happens in the days right after giving birth.”

Another one stated: “Seriously awesome. So amazing and yes so funny and a moment to remember for absolute sure.”
