10 non-screen activities that’ll give your kids a taste of what a 90s childhood was like

Trine Jensen-Burke

Another week of staying home is looming.

There are Zoom meetings to get through, 2nd class maths to try to understand and so much flipping food to prepare.

However, while trying to keep on top of all these things, it is also easy to just stick on the TV for even more Netflix, or let the kids zone out in front of the iPad – again.

However, this week, I have decided to let my kids have a taste of what an 80s and 90s childhood was like. Yep, that’s right. Bring on the hopscotch and the jump ropes and the endless card games of Go Fish.

Fancy giving the screen a bit of a break too? Here are 10 easy non-tech activities the kids are bound to love:

1. Stick horse jumping

Literally – find some longish sticks (go on a scavenger hunt at your local park or use an old broomstick), make some jumps in the garden, and voila – plenty of ‘horse’ jumping fun to be had.

2. Pitch a tent for a campout

Day or night.

3. Chalk art

If you have a Dealz or Mr Price near you – or a large Tesco, get your hands on some chalk and let the kids go to town making art in your driveway.

4. Throw a garden picnic

Food always tastes so much nicer eaten outside anyway.

5. Jump rope

Watch some Youtube videos first of cool tricks to try.

6. Wash the car

Life-lessons are a kind of homeschool subject too.

7. Play dress up

Open your closet and let them go to town.

8. Go Fish

The card game is easy to learn and enjoy – even for smallies.

9. Make s’mores

And cook them outside on the BBQ or inside if the weather is bad.

10. Put on a performance

A ballet, a magic show, finger puppets – whatever they want to try – let them.
