Parent seeks advice on teaching her son how to sit while peeing

Ellen Fitzpatrick

Potty training is not something any parent dreams of doing, but we know it has to be done.

Potty training your child may take a few days or a couple of weeks, but no matter how long it takes, it can be incredibly draining.

One parent, however, has decided to plan ahead and has asked their peers for some advice when it comes to teaching her son how to sit while peeing, rather than standing.

After doing some research and preparation into potty training despite her son only being six months old, the mum found that there are a lot of studies that show it is significantly better for men to pee while sitting.

She found that standing while urinating “doesn’t allow your pelvic floor to relax and does not fully relieve the bladder. This can cause issues later in life.”

She also added that it’s much more of a benefit to parents as there is less of a mess when teaching our sons to do this.

The mum wrote on Reddit: “I’ve seen so many men argue against teaching boys to pee sitting because other children will make fun of them. Which, call me crazy, seems like a very stupid reason to not do something as opposed to medical and hygienic benefits. It just feels more like another aspect of toxic masculinity.”

Giving her advice, one parent wrote: “My almost 4-year-old son knows both. At home, he will sit to pee 90 percent of the time but when we are out in public or he is at school he rather use a urinal than sit to pee on a toilet, can’t say I blame him.”

Another said: “I actually heard that you’re supposed to teach them to pee while sitting and they shouldn’t graduate till standing until their hips are above the toilet bowl. Which tends to come after potty training age, although depends on the child’s height and your plumbing.”

A third added: “Our 3 yo potty trained sitting down. He figured out on his own that he could also pee standing up, which is super helpful when using a gross public bathroom. At home, he mostly sits but will choose to stand occasionally. We don’t really care as long as it all makes it inside the toilet bowl.”
