Top 3 Tips For Pregnant And New Mothers From a Leading Osteopath

Sharyn Hayden

“Ow, my back!”

If you were (un)lucky enough to live with or anywhere near me over the past five years, you’d have heard me say ‘Ow, my back’ approximately 74,000 times.

There was the weakness from carrying babies to term, post-epidural pains, pulled muscles from yanking buggies and carseats around the place and all the aches from co-sleeping in awkward positions with a toddler.

I have been doing my best to counter-balance the physical pressure; having regular physiotherapy sessions, doing gentle exercises to strengthen my core muscles and demanding rubs from my other half!

However, I recently discovered that my choice of pillow over the years has probably NOT been helping me at all, as I caught up with UK Osteopath Kulwinder Baja at the Permanent TSB Ideal Homes Show at the RDS last weekend.

Kulwinder is the founder and inventor of Goldilocks Pillows for adults and children.

His concept is that you are measured for the pillow which fits your exact measurements for optimum comfort – “not too big, not too small, just the right size for you”.. geddit?!

While I had the qualified osteopath in my sights, I also asked his advice for pregnant and new mums.

Here are Kulwinder’s top 3 tips:

1. Pregnant women who are suffering from back or sciatica type pain should sleep with a thin pillow between their legs. This reduces the stretch on the sciatic nerve and can help to reduce back and leg pain.

2. If you have had an epidural or a difficult birth get your pelvis assessed by a qualified Osteopath about four weeks after giving birth. The pelvis can often become rotated and can lead to back and pelvic problems a few months down the line.

3. Cranial Osteopathy for babies can help with digestive problems, the earlier this is done the better. Most babies that I treat often only require one or two treatments and the results are always amazing.
