Kate Middleton decided to share her cancer diagnosis with the world weeks ago but delayed the announcement for her children's sake.
The mum-of-three wanted her children with her when the news was revealed to the public.
They were aware of their mum's illness, but The Sun's Victoria Newton said she delayed sharing her news to protect her kids.
Kate was home with Prince George, Princess Catherine, and Prince Louis when the video was shared.
Victoria Newton told the BBC: "It was actually, I understand, that the Princess made the decision two weeks ago that she was going to do this public statement.
"The key thing for her as a mother, the priority was protecting those three children," she added.
"She didn't want them going to school, being asked even more than they already were," the editor explained.
Kate has been showered with support from the public following Friday's announcement.

The mum explained that doctors conducted planned abdominal surgery on her in January, which was successful.
However, tests discovered that cancer was present.
In a video, the princess shared: "The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.
"My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."
"William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," the mum added.
She stressed that she is going to be okay following the harrowing announcement.
