One in every sixteen women will deliver a pre-term baby in Ireland each year, which means the baby is born before 37 week’s gestation.
And while we know that not all babies born pre-term have a positive outcome and the devastating consequences that has for the families involved, many children who come early go on to live a wonderful life.
Red Méthot, a Canadian photographer and student, decided to photograph some of these children for a school project, to show their resilience and strength.
As a father of two prematurely born children himself, he told the Upworthy website that the topic was especially important to him.
“My son was born at 29 weeks and my daughter at 33 weeks. These are the kind of pictures I would like to have seen when my first child was born — they’ve been through that, and they are great now.”
