You’re never too old to try something new.

Not that any of us are old or anything. Forever young and we certainly plan to stay that way. The best way to make sure that we do that is by not being afraid to try new things, especially if the kids are involved. Sure if you’re playing with your kids it’s almost like you’re a kid yourself. Almost.

The summer is always the best time to try new things because you’ve got time off and you’re not confined to the indoors. The world is your oyster.

If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas of what to do, don’t worry. We are the experts at trying new things so we decided to put together a list of our favourite adventurous activities that you and the kids can do together. If this is your first time trying some of the activities, sure that’s even better.

1. Cycling the Wicklow Green Way

Our guess is that you’ve probably cycled at some point. You’ve likely even cycled with your kids. The question is though – have you brought them cycling on the Wicklow Green Way? It’s a cycling experience like no other. The views are spectacular and the cycle lane is off-road so perfectly safe for the little ones to go pedalling around like the little maniacs they are (yes, kids, get allllll that energy out).

2. Archery

Have you ever shot a bow and arrow? Have you ever watched a movie and really wanted to shoot a bow and arrow? Well, now is your chance. Bring the little ones along to an adventure centre that has archery lessons to give it a go. Let us tell you, there’s nothing that satisfies quite like shooting an arrow in the bullseye for the first time. Darts has nothing on this.

3. Kayaking

We love kayaking because when we’ve finished we can say we did a water sport without the downside of actually getting wet (disclaimer: this outcome can vary greatly based on one’s coordination and one’s child’s willingness to obey your pleas). Paddling around with your family in a kayak can be both relaxing and fun and you’d be surprised how fast you can actually make yourself go despite having not exercised your arms since roughly around the birth of your first child (constantly carrying around children counts as an arm workout, right?).

4. Wall climbing

Speaking of arm exercises, this is one where you might feel a twinge or two the day after. That being said though, wall climbing is SUCH a fun activity. If you haven’t tried it, you should definitely make it a family day out. The little ones’ faces when they reach the very top of the wall is priceless. So cute. We were almost as proud of them as we were of ourselves.

5. Have a quiz night

After a full day of exercise, a quiz night is a good way to wind down (or get riled up, depending on how competitive your family is). You can either get one going at home or find out if there are any table quizzes being held anywhere. It’s a great bonding exercise and a fun way for the kids to learn some interesting pieces of info. Though beware – your image as the all-knowing parents might be called into question.

There you go. Five exciting activities to try this summer if you haven’t already (and if you have, sure, no harm experiencing the fun again). If you want to go for a proper adventure trip and get all of these done in one place (gotta love that efficiency!), you could take a little trip to The Avon in Wicklow, which just happens to be the official starting point of the Wicklow Green Way.

In fact, we have a little giveaway over on the Her website where you can get a little family break in The Avon. All accommodation is covered for three nights, as is breakfast every day. Dinner is also included for two of those nights, plus some other treats. It’d be the perfect way to try out some of these new activities, so go check it out, mums and dads.

Happy adventuring!
