A breastfeeding mum has shared a disturbing ‘bong’ photo

A mum in the US has posted a shocking picture of herself smoking a bong while breastfeeding her young baby.

Mum Kayla Marlowe has shared a worrying photograph of herself breastfeeding while smoking a bong with a pro-marijuana Facebook group called CannaParentingSupport.V.420. The disturbing image shows Kayla, who lives in Portland where marijuana use is legal, feeding her tiny baby while a her friend - tagged as Krystal Rose Shillingford-Holm - lights a bong for her. Marlowe posted the photo, captioned "Needed a safe place to share this beautiful picture", in a pro-cannabis parenting support group and initially received support for he r actions from various group members. One mum, Sierra Cox, admired the image and advised leaning over so as to avoid burning baby:

"Love it!! My boyfriend would do this for me when I breastfed and of course you have to do the lean-over so you don't bump their head or light their little hairs on fire."

However, others were appalled by the mum's actions and called Marlowe out as being hugely irresponsible: The American Academy of Paediatrics Committee on Drugs advise that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, can be stored for months in maternal fat tissues and may be laced with other substances that can be harmful to a breastfeeding baby. The APA also advise that marijuana use can impair judgement and affect a mother's ability to properly care for her baby. Both Shillingford-Holm and Marlowe now appear to have deleted their Facebook profiles.
