Cork woman welcomes baby girl following groundbreaking new IVF treatment

The heartbreak that some people go through trying to get pregnant can be immeasurable. But when it happens, the joy is infinite.

For one Cork woman, her dreams of becoming a mother finally came true thanks to a new IVF treatment.

After a number of unsuccessful IVF cycles, it was recommended that she and her partner try Pre-Implantation Genetic Screening (PGS) with IVF at Cork Fertility Centre.

RTÉ News reports that the couple welcomed a baby girl at Cork University Maternity Hospital last week.

The woman is the first in the country to give birth after undergoing this new IVF treatment, which essentially involves screening the embryos for chromosome abnormalities before they are transplanted.

This significantly increases the chance of a successful pregnancy and decreases the risk of miscarriage, of which half are believed to be caused by such abnormalities.

Considering that one in six people are affected by fertility issues, this marks a major milestone in the field and should give hope to couples who are finding it difficult to have a baby.
