One reason why your body might crave non-food items is that you’re not taking in the right amount of vitamins.

During pregnancy, the foods you eat supply your own needs, as well as those of your growing baby. Sometimes the increased demands of pregnancy may lead to a nutrient deficiency.

If you’re suffering from nausea and vomiting as well this could each your nutrient uptake.

A deficiency in important minerals like iron and zinc may trigger pica or if you have anaemia from not getting enough iron or B vitamins.

Is it dangerous?

A lot of the time, pica isn’t dangerous but addressing the underlying cause can help eliminate any risks.

For example, eating ice won’t do you any harm but if you don’t treat the anaemia causing the craving it could be harmful for you and your baby.

Some things you want to eat could do harm though like clay or hair as they can lead to infections, stomach irritation, a blockage in your digestive tract, vomiting, and weight loss.

On top of this, the full feeling might prevent you from eating enough food to get the nutrients you need.

Can it be treated?

Your OB-GYN will review your medical history and potentially order blood tests to help determine whether you have low levels of certain vitamins and minerals.

Your OB might also recommend taking a different prenatal vitamin and eating a more balanced diet.

If you still feel cravings after this make sure to inform your healthcare provider. Lucky in most cases, pica will stop as soon as you give birth.
