A baby alpaca finally walks with new wheels

Laura Cunningham

Oh nothing, just a tiny baby alpaca on wheels… SQUEAL!

Meet Marie, the teeny tiny alpaca who, it’s fair to say, has had a rough start in life. The disabled animal had badly damaged back legs as a result of a difficult birth, during which her mother and sister also died.

Her guardian angel, Ronja Pohl met Marie at a friend’s farm in Freisen, Germany and instantly fell in love. (Hard relate, Ronja – we love her too.) She decided then and there to give the little orphan a new home and some new wheels to help her walk.

Speaking about her furry adoptee, Ronja says: “She was hopping around as if she wanted to show everyone she has a strong character and wants to live, even if two of her legs are injured.” (Our hearts can’t take much more of this.)

Ronja took Marie to her new home on the farm where she works, near Frankfurt. A vet carefully amputated one of Marie’s back legs and arranged for Ronja to meet with a company that makes wheelchairs for animals. They created a special wheeled harness, especially for Marie.

There’s no stopping the little hairy hero now as she totters happily around Ronja’s barn. “She solves a lot of problems herself. If she falls over, she will get up on her own – if she feels like it. As soon as she is able to carry weight on her third leg, she will get an artificial limb and join my boyfriend’s alpaca herd to live a normal alpaca life.”

How’s that for a happy ending? We love you, Marie!
