“I couldn’t help him in the way I felt he needed it.”

Aaron Carter’s fiancée Melanie Martin has spoken about his death for the first time.

The former child star and singer passed away last weekend at the age of 34.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Melanie said: “My heart is completely broken over the passing of my fiancé Aaron. I knew he was struggling, and I tried everything to help him.

“He has a very independent and strong personality, and I couldn’t help him in the way I felt he needed it.

“I only wish I had more people to help me with him. I will now be raising our son as a single mother and this is the worst day of my life, but I have to be strong for our son. I’m devastated.”

A representative for Aaron confirmed that he passed away last week, and since then, tributes have been flooding in for him.

His older brother Nick spoke about their bond in a touching post on Instagram.

He wrote: “Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.

“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz. Now you can finally have the peace you could never find here on earth….I love you baby brother.”

Hilary Duff, who dated Aaron many years ago, also paid tribute.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: “I am deeply sorry that life was so hard and that you had to struggle in front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent.”
