We all let out a collective ‘Awww’ when we saw the new photos of Princess Charlotte this week.

To celebrate her starting nursery school, Prince William and Duchess Kate released new photos of the two-year-old at Kensington Palace.

The royal children are no doubt adorable but ever wondered why they dress like they’re from the 1940s?

Us too. We love seeing Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s outfits but have never really understood why their outfits are sort of old-fashioned.

As it turns out, quite a lot of thought goes into the kids’ looks.

Prince George has worn a number of outfits by childrenswear designer Rachel Riley.

She says the royals like to opt for looks that won’t date.

“They have chosen a very traditional look and are a traditional family,” she previously told The Telegraph.

“The reason why I design clothes that way is because if they wear very simple things, it’s about the child, and it’s timeless in that you can’t really date a specific photo or put them in something that seems out of date.

“I think they are going for clothing that is classic and timeless, because that photograph is about him and his beaming smile rather than the clothes or drawing attention to them.”

Tradition also plays a big role in how the royals dress. As Harper’s Bazaar points out, George is always dressed in shorts because of his class.

“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts. Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.

“Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristocrat or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”
