‘My kid’s selfishness is ruining Christmas- what should I do?’

Kat O'Connor

Christmas will be here before we know it, but not everyone loves this time of year.

A dad has sparked a debate online after admitting he doesn’t like Christmas because of how his children behave.

He told Reddit that his kids have “no respect or thankfulness” for Christmas.

They’ve lost the meaning of Christmas because his wife is constantly buying them gifts and it’s just expected now.

The dad said he still loves Christmas, but it isn’t the same for him.

“I love Christmas. But my kids have no respect or thankfulness for Christmas.

“Part of that is because my wife brings them home gifts at least weekly but also because the spirit has morphed into unbridled consumerism.”

The dad said he hates how Christmas makes people spend money they don’t have.

“I hate people spending money they don’t have. I hate people giving impersonal gifts like gift cards or just asking for the Amazon wish list so they click and ship at halftime of the football game.

The dad said he hates all of the waste and the plastic, but it seems like all people care about are the gifts.

He said all he wants is for his family to focus on real Christmas traditions, but they can’t.

“Why can’t we just simply work on strengthening traditions such as making cookies, Christmas light hunting, making ornaments.”

Reddit users agreed that the dad was so right.

One said, “Make your own fun and memorable family traditions, without having anything to do with gifts.”

Another suggested, “This is exactly what we do! We do like 1 gift and that’s it. The rest of the time, we do Christmas activities.”

Do you think we’ve lost the meaning of Christmas? How can this dad bring some of it back?
