Watch: The McDonald’s Christmas ad has left us in floods of tears

Kat O'Connor

Imaginary Iggy is everything.

I was watching the Bake Off final last night when the McDonald’s Christmas ad popped up on our TV.

I love a good Christmas ad. I’ll happily watch half a dozen of them if I’m in need of a happiness boost.

I feel nostalgic when the Cornflakes ad airs for the first time and the An Post one always makes me think of my Dad.

The SuperValu one left me weeping, the John Lewis one warmed my heart and the Disney one made me smile like the Cheshire Cat.

And then McDonald’s came along and turned me into a blubbering mess.

This year’s advert is hands down my favourite so far, even if it has turned me into a complete and utter emotional wreck.

I don’t know what it is about Imaginary Iggy but he has pulled on my heartstrings.

In the McDonald’s Christmas ad, we meet Imaginary Iggy and their friend Matilda.

The duo is inseparable and does everything together. They watch movies, perform plays and even get treats ready for Santa and his reindeer.

They are the very best of friends until the girl starts to grow up.

In a heartbreaking twist (seriously this scene made me cry more than any Call The Midwife episode) Matilda hides Iggy in her wardrobe.

But a trip to McDonald’s with her friends helps spark her imagination again.

Speaking about the ad, CMO Michelle Graham-Clare said: “We’re confident our advert perfectly encapsulates the magic of childhood imagination which comes alive at this time of year and provides a helpful reminder that you’re never too old to make-believe.”

Mabel performs a stunning rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time in the ad.

You can watch the ad below, but have the tissues at the ready! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
