This Is How Many People Still Observe Lent in Ireland

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Easter is almost upon us, but how many of us have earned the chocolate feast to come by abstaining from treats for Lent?

Surprisingly, quite a few of us are still keeping with the old Catholic tradition. A survey by discount store Dealz revealed that 46 per cent of people had pledged to take on the 40-day challenge this year.

Our reasoning for doing so might be a little less pious than it appears however; two thirds of those asked said they would be giving up something for personal goals and benefits as opposed to 15 per cent of people who were doing so for religious reasons.

Nevertheless, one in every two people questioned said they were fully confident they wouldn’t break lent in 2016.

While 70 per cent of those taking part said they would give something up, the other 30 per cent said that, for 40 days, they would be taking something up; 80 per cent of those said they would take up the gym and healthy eating.

Unsurprisingly, 66 per cent said farewell to chocolate, crisps, fizzy drinks and sweets, whilst the other 34 per cent gave up smoking, alcohol and swearing.
