Can mayonnaise really remove crayon? I put this parenting hack to the test

Melissa Carton

Does it really work?

Having been a parent now for the better part of a decade I’ve come across a fair amount of parenting hacks.

Some have worked, some sort of worked and some were just a big nope.

As my youngest is currently a toddler, stain removal hacks are everything and the more I can find the better.

Most recently I came across a parenting hack online that said that mayonnaise, yes regular old mayo, can remove crayon from walls and surfaces, so I decided to put it to the test.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think mayonnaise was going to be able to hold up to the massive amount of artwork that my darling daughter decided to draw on my walls.

Saying that if it works great because it’s hard to get a good stain remover that can cut through crayon without stripping the paint off of the wall too.

So I squirted some mayonnaise out onto a dish cloth and had at it.

There’s a lot of crayon on the wall so for this tried and tested piece I focused on a big patch of bright green crayon to see if the mayonnaise could cut through it.

This is the before:

And this is the after:

Yes, it works! YAY!

It took off the green no problem and I have to say I’m pretty impressed.

It’s so handy to know that such a nifty stain remover has been sitting in my kitchen this whole time and I would definitely recommend it if your child has gone crayon happy with your walls (or floors, or table…..)

I’m going to have to give this mayonnaise parenting hack a 10/10 because it just works.
