Uh-oh: 5 things that make you look more tired (than you are)

Trine Jensen-Burke

So, we all know that not getting enough shuteye can leave us looking a little less than fabulous. Like, boy, do we know.

But were you aware that even if you have managed to get enough sleep (for a change!), there are some other pitfalls that can make you look wrecked too?

If you too hate being told you look tired (seriously, stop telling mums we look tired, we bloody well know we do, okay!), then watch out for these blunders:

Eating too much salty foods: Sodium can leave you looking puffy. Take-out’s and processed food, as well as sauces, can be a real minefield of salt, so approach with caution.

Sleeping with your face in the pillow: This can make fluid pools in your tissues, so you puff up. Try to sleep on your back instead, which has also been said to help minimize wrinkles, as the cotton in your pillowcase can suck moisture from your skin.

Not drinking enough water: Dehydration puts you on the fast track to looking tired – and older than you are. Aim for two liters of water a day.

Piling on makeup: Too much foundation sinks into fine lines and masks your natural glow, making you look older and more tired.  Also skip too-bright cheek colour; the contrast can further wash you out.

Wearing red hues of eyeshadow: Eye makeup that has red undertones can play up on the redness in your eyes, and we all know how that makes us look.
