10 fun facts about bunnies and chicks that you definitely didn’t know

Jade Hayden

Ah, Easter.

A time for eating chocolate, telling the kids to stop eating chocolate, and lamenting the sheer amount of chocolate that has been consumed.

Unfortunately for us, this year’s Easter will be a tad different due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still enjoy ourselves.

And yes, enjoying ourselves does involve learning some fun facts about bunnies and chicks (this one’s more for the kids, but hey, it’s never too late to learn, right?).

It’ll be a distraction from the world outside, if nothing else.

1. When a bunny is happy he does what it called a ‘binky’

A binkying bunny is a very happy bunny, take note.

And when a bunny is very happy, he will launch himself into the air and twist his body in a seemingly unnatural way before landing on his feet and running off.

Pretty good sight to see.

2. When a bunny is happy he also grinds his teeth

He could also be in severe pain or discomfort, but that’s for you to decipher.

Mums, this Dublin pet expo will keep the kids entertained for the weekend

3. A baby bunny is called a ‘kit’ or ‘kitten’

Just like a cat, right?!

Meanwhile, an adult male rabbit is called a buck and an adult female is called a doe.

4. Over half of the world’s bunnies live in North America

Best get over there ASAP, yeah?

While, most of the world’s population of rabbits live in the States, the European bunny has pretty much been introduced all over the world. Although, countries in Eurasia have less natural rabbits than those elsewhere, there are some hares to be found.

5. Contrary to popular belief, bunnies can be housetrained

Most people may assume bunnies to be an outdoor pet, but bunnies can also be housetrained meaning that they don’t need to spend cold winter nights shivering outside.

In fact, pet rabbits are likely to live a lot longer if they’re kept indoors all year round due to decreased threats from other animals and irregular temperatures.

6. Chicks can fly!

Or at least, chickens can.

Although chickens are generally thought to be a flightless bird, they can in fact lift off the ground enough to speed up their movements, launch into trees and bushes, or escape over fences.

Fair play to them.

7. Chicks talk to their mothers while still in their egg

And their mother talks back too!

Just as a real life human mother might chat to her baby while it’s still inside the womb, chicken chat to their young before they’ve hatched.

Just via chirps instead of actual words, obviously.

8. There are more chickens on the earth than people

Which means that there are a lot of chicks too.

It’s estimated there that are around 25 billion chickens on the globe, and more chickens roaming around than any other kind of bird.

9. Chicks can remember faces

In fact, chicks can remember the faces of up to 100 people or animals. So if you were ever mean to a chick, feel bad, because it’ll remember.

10. Chicks weren’t always a farm animal

Although most chickens are now bred to be eaten (or to produce eggs to be eaten), chickens were first bred for cockfights.

Such fights between chickens are now, thankfully, illegal but the, ahem, sport was quite popular across America until it was eventually outlawed.

Thankfully.
