25 Meals Your Kids Should Be Able To Cook By Age 11 (Apparently)

Katie Mythen-Lynch

If the idea of enjoying a cup of tea in the living room while your 10-year-old whips up a spaghetti Bolognese in the kitchen fills you with fear and trepidation, hold on to your seat.

According to the latest poll of 2,000 parents, most mums and dads believe that their offspring should ideally be able to rustle up 25 decent meals and desserts… by the age of 11.

Yes, you are reading that correctly; your little Jamie or Nigella should be able to cook porridge, lasagne and casserole – and shouldn’t be fazed by roasting a chicken, whipping up a chilli con carne and doing a stir fry.

Cottage pie, omelette and apple crumble are also dishes mums and dads reckon their kids should be able to make.

The research, conducted in honour of the launch of the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, revealed that six in 10 parents think being able to cook is an important life skill – however 37 per cent currently cook less than once a week with their children.

Two thirds would like their little ones to cook more often and nine in 10 respondents said cooking with their offspring makes families closer, while 59 per cent of mums and dads reckon cooking gives kids a greater appreciation of food.

A fifth of those polled said they resort to chucking away uneaten food because didn’t know how to use up ingredients bought for a specific recipe and 17 per cent said they waste food because they end-up eating out more than they had planned to.
