She’s heading home.
A baby assumed to be the smallest in the world is coming home from hospital after spending the last year undergoing intense treatments.
The now 13 month old baby was delivered at only 25 weeks and weighed only 212g, or 7.47oz. And only, 24cm long, she was the same weight as an apple.
Kwek Yu Xuan is believed to be the smallest baby in the world, a record previously held by an American baby girl, according to the University of Iowa’s Tiniest Babies Registry.
Yu Xuan was born by emergency C-section four months early after her mother was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, which is when you suffer dangerously high blood pressure which can then damage vital organs.

Possibly fatal to both mother and child, Yu Xuan was brought into the world a lot earlier than expected and now weighs 14 pounds after having a “limited chance of survival” when she was born.
Singapore’s National University Hospital, where the baby was born, said in a statement: “Against the odds, with health complications present at birth, she has inspired people around her with her perseverance and growth, which makes her an extraordinary ‘Covid-19’ baby – a ray of hope amid turmoil.”
During her stay at hospital, the baby was given multiple different treatments and was heavily dependent on machines to keep her alive.
But now doctors are saying that she is well enough to head home but will still need a lot of monitoring as she still suffers from chronic lung disease and needs help breathing.
Her mother Wong Mei Ling told the media that she was shocked at her newborn’s size and weight when she was born as her first child was born at 40 weeks.
