Am I wrong for expecting my husband to do the school run?

Kat O'Connor

A mum has sparked a debate after her husband said it isn’t fair to expect him to wake up for the school run.

She said her husband works from home, but he believes it isn’t fair to expect him to wake up at 8.15 am when he doesn’t finish work until 12:30 am.

The mum explained that she stays at home because her elder child has special educational needs.

The couple’s original plan was for the dad to do the morning school run and the mum would collect the children from school.

However, the dad now wants to change their plan because “it’s really not fair for him to get up at 8.15 am Monday to Friday to do this”.

The mum does all the housework, cooking, cleaning, appointments, admin, planning, paying bills, and taking kids to clubs and activities.

She said all her husband does is the school run and take the bin out once a week.

“Some might think, as I’m a stay-at-home mum I’m already up each morning to do all the work of getting the kids ready for school is done.”

The mum said all her husband really needs to do is drive their child to school.

“I could take my child but I don’t see why I should,” she told Mumsnet.

The mum understands that he works late, but doesn’t think it is too much to ask.

Fellow mums agreed and said her husband is being incredibly selfish.

One said: “If he didn’t do the school run it sounds like he would never spend any time with his child.”

Another suggested: “What would be more reasonable is if you did nursery drop off. But weekends and holidays he pulls his weight with the kids and you get a lie in.”

However, others supported the husband and said he shouldn’t have to wake up early after working for so long.

“You get to completely focus at home because he works very long hours earning money. You should be doing the school run the majority of the time,” one said.

Another added: “I’d suggest he does more of other things to even up the balance but I wouldn’t expect someone who didn’t finish work until after midnight to get up to do the school run if I was at home.”
