This Growing Birthday Party Trend Is All Sorts Of Ridiculous

Trine Jensen-Burke

When you are a kid, only one day tops Christmas morning, and that is your birthday.

You get to eat the cake, everyone fusses over you and there are tons of presents waiting to be opened. It’s just total bliss, from morning till night.

And much as it is lovely to celebrate the day your little darlings were born, we just cannot seem to get our collective heads around this latest trend. Guys, are you ready for it? Say hello to the Half Birthday Celebrations.

Yep, you heard us. Mums and dads with too much time (and money) on their hands are now not only celebrating their children’s actual birthdays, but also their half birthdays. Meaning, if your tot is born on February 18th, not only will he get a bash that day, you will also repeat the celebrations on the 18th of August, just to celebrate that he is now six months older than he was in February.

Now, we know that kids since the dawn of time (well, for a long time anyway) have described their ages as three and three quarters, or five AND A HALF. And when you have only graced this planet for such a short time, I suppose pointing out those extra few months does feel important.

The thing is; does it really require a party? Or are we just spoiling kids of a generation that are already fairly spoiled?

Looking at the website HalfBirthdays.com it would seem you can already get your hands on everything you would need for a half birthday bash, from half a cake to half a candle (oh; and half a pinata too).

Now, we can hear you squeals now .. “OMG – That’s sooo cute”

But ladies, it’s not. It’s ridiculous. In the interest of keeping your children from becoming utterly spoiled little brats, please try to resist.

What do YOU think about this trend? Would you throw a half birthday party for your kids, or do you agree with us that one is enough?! Let us know in the comments or tweet us at @Herfamilydotie
