No one knows what way a birth is going to go, but the 555 rule ensures rest for all new mums.
You can prepare for how you, as a new mum, will look after yourself during the postpartum recovery stage and, one of the best ways you can take care of yourself and your family is to make sure you get the rest you need.
Sleep is proven to be one of the biggest healers for recovery and it is what the 5-5-5 rule is all about. It’s a great method to add to your recovery plan.
This method is simple and it can mentally ensure that you prioritise your rest and recovery after your baby arrives.
According to White Oaks Wellness, the 5-5-5 rule first involves five days of being in the bed (getting up to use the bathroom, of course), but mostly being in bed focusing on bonding and skin-to-skin contact with your new baby.
In this phase of postpartum, it’s hoped a new mum has someone to support her by bringing her meals and water, ensuring she gets all the rest she needs.
The second stage of the 5-5-5 rule is for the next five days being on the bed.
This will see the new mum having a little more movement.
If a new mum is up for it, sitting up on the bed, and continuing to have skin-to-skin and cuddle time with your new baby – this will help release oxytocin hormones to help you bond and breastfeed.
Mums with older children can use these days as an opportunity to invite them to come up and spend time with them on the bed reading or colouring – anything that isn’t over-exerting her.
The final part of the 5-5-5 rule is five days being around the bed.
While the main goal should still be getting enough rest, these five days may be a good time to start standing up and moving around the bed.
If possible, maybe try out some light activities – ironing, laundry, or a little walk – but keep standing to 30 minutes at a time, or less if your body is signalling you to lay down.
Making sure a bed or couch is always nearby is important during this phase.
Postpartum recovery is all about listening to your body and going at a pace that feels right for you.
