National Open the Magic Day: Ideas on how to mark it with your children

Jody Coffey

Find your magic today!

Today (September 25th) is National ‘Open the Magic’ Day, which celebrates read-alouds, picture books, the love of reading, and students who struggle to find their reading voice.

Teachers, parents, and guardians worldwide can take part in the day by reading a picture book (or multiple) in order to ‘Open the Magic’. The day dedicated to the magic of reading was founded by Courtney Hinshaw of Ramona Recommends, a book inventory that holds almost 3,000 books.

If you’d like to mark this day with your child and find ‘confetti moments’ together, this refers to when a child or adult relates to a point in a story that brings them surprise, happiness, joy, and a place where they feel like they belong, while also creating lasting memories.

Today is also a day to express gratitude to the parents and teachers who do everything in their power to help children become who they are meant to be through the gift of reading.

There are a number of ways to ‘Open the Magic’ today.

The first and most obvious is reading your favourite picture book to your class or child and getting lost in a special imaginary world together.

If you’re a teacher, you may consider holding a read-aloud where children can get the chance to read and discuss the characters, world, and themes of a book. At home, this can also be achieved with the entire family.

Perhaps you’d like to have a more immersive experience of your favourite magical and mythical reads by having a themed meal inspired by your favourite picture book or get dressed in the attire of the beloved characters.

Even sitting down to discuss your why each of you love certain characters or places within the picture book is a fun and educational way to further fuel a child’s love of reading.

Purchasing a new book picture book today and allowing your little one to choose your next adventure could also inspire their next favourite read.

And remember, ‘Opening the Magic’ can be done anywhere, anytime.
