Behold: The $100 (that’s €91) Golden Donut

Katie Mythen-Lynch

There was a time when we were impressed by the Cronut, then the Macaronut came along and our heads were turned.

Now however, a New York bakery has come up with what we believe to be the most beautiful (and ostentatious) piece of confectionery ever invented. Behold: The $100 Golden Donut.

The sparkly work of Williamsburg eatery Manila Social Club, the “Golden Cristal Ube Donut” (to give it its full and proper title) boasts a centre of ube (purple yam) and champagne mousse. The outside is gilded in a Cristal-flavored icing generously flecked with 24-carat gold.

Even restaurant owner Björn DelaCruz is awe-struck by the Golden Donut’s popularity, with customers ordering boxes of the extravagant treats:

“… there are people willing to put down a grand for a dozen doughnuts,” he told a local food magazine.

We’re secretly hoping they make an appearance on this side of the pond soon. Engagement ring donut, anyone?
