Pared-back: The ONLY 5 essentials you need to buy for your new baby

Katie Mythen-Lynch

New parents tend to go credit card crazy before baby arrives.

Honestly, who could blame them? From nappy bins to wipe warmers, organic swaddling cloths to bouncy chairs, there’s an entire industry devoted to feeding the fears (and indulging the whims) of first time mums and dads.

If your nursery is starting to look like the warehouse for a baby superstore, take a step back and consider your haul carefully while there’s still time to return some frivolous purchases.

Ask any seasoned parent and they’ll agree, all you really need are these five newborn must-haves for the first week, the rest you can pick up as and when you need them (and you might not).

1. A car seat

You will literally be going absolutely nowhere without this (no, really; they won’t let you leave the hospital unless you have one) so do your research and buy the best one you can afford. For advice on fitting it in your car, drop by a Check It Fits event, run by the Road Safety Authority.

2. Nappies

Newborn nappies are tiny and adorable, which is good because soon they will be taking up every available space in your home. A good nappy keeps wetness away from baby’s skin, helping to protect against irritation, rashes and chafing, so choose carefully. Newborns will need on average seven or eight nappies a day, they grow quickly though so they may only be in the smallest size for a few weeks.

3. A feeding station

Whether you’re set on breast or bottle. feeding this baby will be the main activity in your day for a while so make sure you’ve got a comfy place to do it. A good nursing pillow is a must. And stock up on breast pads, nipple cream and nipple shields – you don’t want to be caught short. While it’s not an essential, a rocking chair or glider can be super soothing for both mama (or daddy) and baby during feeding.

4. An app to track feeds

The traditional sheet of paper has had its day – keeping track of all those feeds and poops is so much more straightforward when you’re using an app. There are plenty to choose from, just find one you like the look of and download it, then you’l never have to scramble for a pen after the 3am feed.

5. A cot, bassinet or co-sleeper

Your newborn will be sleeping in your room for the first six months so try and have this part decided long before your due date. While it’s fine to use a second hand piece given to you by friends or family, do ensure that the mattress you put in it is brand new.
