Dad sparks controversy after refusing to cut his baby’s umbilical cord

Kat O'Connor

A dad-to-be has sparked a debate online after admitting he doesn’t want to cut his baby’s umbilical cord.

He explained that the thought of it makes him feel “squeamish” but that he doesn’t want to upset his wife.

He said it feels too much like a medical procedure and it feels uncomfortable to “cut into human flesh”.

“My wife is full-term and being induced tomorrow. I told her quite early on, that I didn’t want to cut to the cord.

“I know it’s just me and that I’m making it weird, but I find it really squeamish to cut into human flesh. It seems like a medical procedure and I’m REALLY uncomfortable with it.”

His wife accepted his decision, but she keeps mentioning it now that her due date is here.

“Now the big day is upon us, my wife has pressed the issue again. I told her I want to be involved in every way I can, including catching the baby and handing him or her to their new mum.”

However, the dad just doesn’t feel comfortable with cutting the cord.

He explained that he is a first responder but he is squeamish about cutting into the cord.

“I am a first responder so I’ve seen every kind of gore you can think of. Blood, guts, screaming, etc. I am used to these things.”

Fellow Reddit users agreed that the dad doesn’t have to cut the cord if it makes him uncomfortable.

“My husband didn’t want to with our son and I was fine with that. When it all happened, though, the doctor asked him and he just did it sort of out of shock and probably feeling like he should.”

Another added: “Being truthful I don’t know a lot of fathers who do cut the cord.”

A third shared: “My husband was squeamish about it too and didn’t cut the cord. I still felt like he advocated for me, protected me, encouraged me every step of the way, and overall was an active partner through the entire process.”

Many said he should do it so he’s more involved in the birth, especially because his wife is ‘doing all of the work’.

One mum pointed out: “She’s literally doing all of the work, maybe from her perspective, you doing that means you’re taking a more active role.”

In the end, the man’s wife needed an emergency C-section so the medical team cut the umbilical cord. However, before she went into labour he agreed that he would hold his wife’s hand as she cut the cord.
