10 rock n’roll baby names inspired by this year’s Electric Picnic line-up

Brought to you by Electric Ireland.

Attention music-loving mamas…

Planning on bopping your bump around Electric Picnic this September? Music festivals are rife with cool baby name inspiration.

You don’t have to go for Blue Angel (daughter of U2’s The Edge and Aislinn O’Sullivan) or Moon Unit, Dweezil and Diva Muffin (the unfortunate three children of Frank Zappa) to add some rock ‘n’ roll to your baby’s moniker.

Instead, look to the stage and the people strumming the guitars and playing the pianos.

It’s a guaranteed way to ensure that one day they’ll see their name in lights. Here are ten of our favourites, hand-picked from the line-up at this year’s Electric Picnic.

1. Jules

Pete Tong presents Ibiza Classics will see the legendary DJ team up with The Heritage Orchestra to perform dance anthems at Electric Picnic this year. The conductor? None other than the renowned composer and arranger Jules Buckley.

2. Annie

Did your eyes meet over an Annie Mac live set? Name your first born girl after the Irish BBC DJ.

3. Guy

The patron saint of comedians and dancers, Guy is a middle class English name that’s coming back into fashion. Just ask Elbow’s Guy Edward John Garvey.

4. Chrissie

A derivation of Christine, this name was a popular one for Irish babies many years ago. These days it would be a fitting homage to Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde.

5. Birdy

She bewitched the nation at the age of 14 with her cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. Since then, 19-year old singer Birdy has released three albums, toured the world and been nominated for a Brit Award. Astonishing stuff from the girl whose name means ‘little bird’.

6. Romy

A nod to Romy Madley Croft of The XX, the name Romy is Latin and is a short version of the name Rosemary, which means “dew of the sea.”

7. Rufus

Before Chaka Kahn made her name as a singer, songwriter, producer, visual artist, author, actor, philanthropist, entrepreneur, activist and mother, she was part of the Chicago funk band Rufus. Interestingly, it also means ‘red haired’.

8. Bon

Are you a lifelong Duran Duran fan? They hit the main stage at Electric Picnic on Sunday but you can remember them forever by naming your offspring after lead singer Simon Le Bon. It even means ‘forecaster of a good future’ in Latin!

9. Walter

The Frank and Walters are Stradbally bound this September for their set at the Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow. While the name Frank is a little dry, the name Walter is a quirky classic with a geeky charm.

10. Josh

Also known as Father John Misty, Josh Tillman is set to make his Picnic debut this year. A former member of Fleet Foxes, his folk-rock alter ego has a rather random religious link, but his real name, Joshua, is a firm fixture in the Old Testament.

Electric Ireland is the official energy partner of Electric Picnic. And we’re bringing 90s chart sensations 5ive, S Club Party and Jenny Berggren from Ace of Base PLUS a heap of nostalgia-filled fun and frolics, to our ultimate Throwback Stage at Stradbally this September.
