Having twins is nothing out of the ordinary.
Yet this mum is not having twins in the traditional sense, she’s pregnant with two babies but they’re not wombmates, if you will.
Kelsey Hatcher, 32 from Alabama in the United States, was born with two uteruses is now pregnant in both.
She and her husband, Caleb, said they were very surprised to learn earlier this year that Kelsey was pregnant.
The couple was even more surprised to learn at Kelsey Hatcher’s eight-week ultrasound appointment that she was expecting two babies, each in a separate uterus.
The mother-of-three has known about her rare condition, called uterus didelphys, since she was 17. However, she never imagined she would carry a baby in both at the same time.
At her eight-week scan, she asked her ultrasound tech if there was only one baby to which the nurse said yes.
“So, I just kind of laid back and was relaxing. Everything looked good. There was only one,” she told ABC News.
Yet just as Kelsey was going to warn the nurse of her second uterus she got distracted by what she saw on the screen.
“Before she could say anything, I said, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s another one.’ Probably all I did was laugh for 30 minutes or so because it was just like, this is not happening,” she explained.
Though the babies aren’t sharing a uterus, according to Dr. Shweta Patel, the OB-GYN looking after Kelsey said the babies are considered fraternal twins.
“There are lots of different types of twin pregnancies out there,” Dr Patel said to Good Morning America.
“Most likely what happened is that she ovulated separately and had one egg come down each fallopian tube, meaning coming down on each side of the uterus, and then sperm travelled up on each separate uterus and fertilisation occurred separately,” she said of Kelsey’s pregnancies.
