Princess Charlotte’s name is set to get even longer
While she is already in line to get the title of Duchess of Edinburgh thanks to her late great-grandfather Prince Philip’s request, there’s another one she may get her hands on.
Charlotte will be known as Princess Royal, which is an honorific currently carried by Princess Anne, according to Marie Claire Magazine.
The title generally goes to the “eldest daughter of a monarch,” which is why Anne holds it right now.
Yet because royal rules are very traditional, they only allow for there to be one Princess Royal at a time. So, that means Charlotte will have to wait to succeed Anne to gain the title when she passes.
Princess Anne didn’t get the honorific until she was 36 years of age.
There have only been seven Princesses Royal to date, the first being Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria, The Sun reports.
For Charlotte to receive the title, Anne would have to die and Charlotte’s father, William, would have to be the king. That means King Charles would also have to either pass away or abdicate the throne.
When this happens, there will be a lot of other changes in the royal lineup with Prince George receiving the title of Prince of Wales and his younger brother, Louis, will probably acquire either the Duke of Cambridge or the Duke of York name.
Though as of right now there is not guarantee of this happening as King Charles has spoken about streamlining the royal family and only having ‘core members.’
