The Pregnancy Diaries: Week 18 – This Baby Is Eating All My Food

Big belly

Nothing edible is safe.

I’ve developed the appetite of a wrestler and there is nothing I won’t eat. Breakfast this morning was two bowls of cereal, toast and soft chocolate biscuits that have been in the press for too long. I’m even starting to lust after other people’s lunches at work and am very close to doing the unthinkable and gorging the sandwiches they’ve left in the fridge.

I just can’t understand where it’s all going and why I’m this hungry. Of course I’m blaming the baby – it must be eating everything!

I’ve been trying my best to feel the baby and I’m reading loads of articles on how to make it move. One method that did actually work is lying down on my back in a quiet room. I did feel flutter-type sensations but I’ve also been warned that this may be gas, and boy is there a lot of that. My hubby is already tired of scolding me for those loud exchanges and in turn I’ve stopped pretending it was caused by my heels or some thing else just as daft. I really am powerless to stop it and don’t worry, I’m still mortified every time it happens! But when it does happen in public, I usually deal with it by offering a glare to some poor unsuspecting child or adult. (I’ve noticed that children are easier targets because they usually smile.)

I’m also swotting up and purchased ‘What To Expect When Expecting’ (apparently it’s sold 10 million copies worldwide so it must be okay) and a separate doctor’s guide to pregnancy and birth. I’ve learned a lot from both but honestly, I am not ready to embrace the pages on labour and those graphic pictures. I’m going to leave that until MUCH later.

I’ve also started to think about breastfeeding and have been getting different advice from friends and family. It’s a tough one to decide on but as suggested in my “how to” books, I’ve bought a bra with no under wiring in case I do decide to go for it. Interestingly, my hubby is not overly pushed on the idea so at least that takes a lot of pressure off.

Right, I’m off with the bump to raid the fridge again – I think yesterday’s potatoes with a slab of butter will do me just fine for a snack!
