Parents who have purchased the possibly-infected batches are advised to dispose of them

A hypoallergenic formula for sensitive babies has been recalled over the possible presence of a serious bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, batches of Nutramigen LGG Stage 1 & 2 Hypoallergenic Formula have been recalled as they may be at risk of containing bacteria.

While Cronobacter infections are rare, the bacteria can cause bloodstream infections such as sepsis or meningitis in severe cases.

Most diagnosed Cronobacter infections are among infants who have been fed powdered infant formula, and the bacteria can be harmful to babies younger than two months or born prematurely.

Cronobacter-related illnesses may have symptoms such as fever and poor feeding, excessive crying, or very low energy.

Batches of the formula, which is produced in the US by Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition, in 400g tubs with the codes ZL3F7D, ZL3FAA, and ZL3FDM have been recalled.

These batches will be removed from sale, and parents and guardians are urged to dispose of the potentially infected tubs and not allow their children to consume them.
