This once-popular baby name is at risk of going extinct

This baby name was one of the most popular for girls in Ireland

Choosing a baby name is never an easy decision when there are so many options out there.

Many of us gravitate towards traditional names, but many love unique names that may not be as popular.

However, a lot of parents tend to pick names that have stood the test of time.

Names like Grace, Emily, Mia, and Olivia never seem to go out of style, but there is one baby girl name that is at risk of going extinct.

The name Kiera, traditionally spelled Ciara here in Ireland, is diminishing in popularity. So much so that the name could go extinct at some stage in the future.

Speaking about the name’s drop in popularity, BabyCentre’s chief marketing officer, Faye Mingo told The Mirror.

“We know there are always parents on the lookout for something unique so Zahraa, Kiera, Alyssia, or Elyse could be the perfect choice for parents who want a name that stands out from the crowd,” she said.

She said parents shouldn’t give up on the name just yet because it is a beautiful choice for a baby girl.

“These names might have fallen out of popularity, but they could be the perfect choice for your new arrival if you want a unique baby name. Though these names are familiar, they’re likely to be the only child in their class with the name,” she added.

The name Ciara may not be as popular as it once was but it does have a special meaning behind it. The name Ciara is of Gaelic origin. It means ‘dark-haired’ and was often used for babies with dark hair and eyes because they “resembled the night sky”.
