‘My mum named me after a Harry Potter character and it’s so embarrassing’

It’s certainly a reaction that would make you reconsider picking names from the literary and film world.

It’s perfectly understandable that a new parent would want to name their child after a beloved movie or book character.

However, does letting your child enter the real world with a name inspired by the magical world of witchcraft and wizardry cross a line?

One Reddit user admitted they’re ashamed of their Harry Potter-inspired name and believes the moniker is ruining their life.

Taking to Reddit, the daughter first explained how her name, as well as her siblings’ names, came to pass.

“My mum is a huge Harry Potter nut. She and my dad actually met in a Harry Potter internet relay chat (like Discord) in the early 2000s. They got married and had kids and from day one decided to embarrass us for life by naming us after some Harry Potter and Star Wars characters.”

While she decided not to reveal what her name was, she did share that she has been named after a popular female character in the Harry Potter franchise.

“It has honestly been hell. I have a stupid name and since we were little my parents have forced stuff like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel movies, etc, down our throats.

“Everything is about dragons and magic and blah blah blah. I’m so sick of it. Every birthday, every holiday, everything is just organised around ‘fandom’,” she wrote.

The daughter then shared that the Christmas holidays become all about the Harry Potter movies, something she feels she needs to get away from as she gets older.

The daughter decided that she needed a break from their Harry Potter movie night and visited a friend’s house.

This resulted in an argument with her mum who couldn’t understand why she was breaking ‘family tradition’.

She said her friend’s family is “normal and like things a normal amount”, but her mum was less than impressed with her decision.

“My mum got really mad and started talking about how it’s a family tradition and how I’m basically rejecting her.

Her mother even told her she wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Harry Potter.

The girl said their obsession with the franchise has completely tainted her childhood, even her birthdays.

Many users came to the daughter’s defense in the comments section. They agreed that her mum should ease up when it comes to forcing her interest on her kids.

Others suggested the possibility of changing her name and doing away with the shame that comes with it.

“Lots of people enjoy these things without making them their whole life,” one user wrote.

“You’re allowed to have your own interests, and your parents aren’t making life easier by forcing things they like on you,” another commented.

“If you feel like you’re not allowed to have your own interests/hobbies/alone time you should be able to say so,” another said.
